BMW is proud to be one of the official sponsors of this year’s Winter Olympics, held in Sochi, Russia. Most of you probably already knew that, but what a lot of people probably don’t know is that BMW has been enlisted to help the United State’s two-man bobsled team win gold in Sochi.
Michael Scully, a BMW designer, has raced both cars and snowboards, so was excited when he was enlisted to help the United State’s possibly win its first two-man bobsled gold medal since the 1936 games. His first priority was redesigning the body of the sled. Using a lightweight carbon fiber that is found in BMW’s newest all-electric cars, Scully was able to produce something that was significantly smaller and built to get better speed than the previous bobsleds, who’s designs date all the way back to 1992.
The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation has a minimum standard of 375 pounds for an empty two-man bobsled, so Scully moved weight from the front of the sled to the middle to give it a better handling ability and to help maintain its momentum. These BMW-based bobsleds have already proved themselves worthy of being used in the Olympics by helping bobsledder Steven Holcomb of the United States win the World Cup title recently in Germany.
