BMW’s two all-new electric and hybrid cars, the i3 and i8, are being met with rave reviews. With this in mind, BMW has plans to increase battery production for those two models as well as “additional hybrid models” in the future.
To get these batteries, BMW will spend billions of Euros ordering new batteries from Samsung SDI Co.
“The battery is a key component in every electric vehicle—since it basically determines the range and performance capabilities of the car,” Klaus Draeger, BMW’s purchasing chief, said in a statement. “In Samsung SDI, we have chosen a supplier that offers us the best-available technology with future-oriented Korean battery expertise.”
This investment puts BMW in a prime position to expand its electric and hybrid lineup and compete against other luxury electric car makers, such as Tesla.
Here at Perillo BMW, we are very excited by this new BMW development. We love BMW’s ‘i’ lineup and would love to see more models added in the future. If you want to see what electric luxury feels like, stop by today and test out the 2014 BMW i3.
