Since 1994, the BMW plant it Spartanburg, South Carolina has produced over 1.9 million vehicles. Now it is getting some well-deserved recognition for its efforts over the past year.
The National Association of Foreign Trade Zones has named the BMW Manufacturing Co. its exporter of the year. The plant represents a $5 billion investment and produces about 1,000 cars every day. It is the only BMW facility that produces the X3, X5 and X6 models.
This plant is the exclusive exporter of passenger vehicles through the Port of Charleston. The plant is projected to create over 260,000 vehicles this year and will export about 70% of them to over 130 markets worldwide. BMW exports have been on the rise in the past few years and look to increase in the future. BMW contributed more than $3.1 billion in exports in 2009 and over $4 billion in 2010.
This year will be the first full year of production of the X3 model at the facility. The X3 has increased demand for BMW worldwide and the plant will increase their production to 300,000 vehicles in 2012.
