BMW’s legacy of spirited four-seater convertibles continues, not with the 1 or the 3 Series, but with the 2015 BMW 228i, the first new-gen droptop driver’s car to hit the Perillo BMW dealership.
The 228i makes a strong case as an entry-level luxury vehicle. Prices start in the upper $30,000 range, though the attractive exterior styling and numerous interior comforts and amenities make it feel like a premium vehicle worth slightly more.
Convertibles are meant to be driven out in pleasant sunny days, and as such the 228i’s driving mechanics are more mellow than you’d expect from, say, a track car. The ride quality is smooth and controlled and there is plenty of protection from wind buffeting and noise.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t just put up the top (which can be done at up to 30 mph and makes the car as quiet as a library) and stomp your foot down for some fun. The engine is a torquey 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that manages to produce a very pleasant sound (and performance to match).
We’re fairly certain the 2015 BMW 228i Convertible also performs magic, as its 240-hp/250-lb-ft of torque engine still manages to reach 34 mpg on the highway. But maybe that’s just the eight-speed Steptronic transmission—which, in addition to contributing to fuel economy, is also quite sporty and responsive when you pull on the paddle shifters.
