Are Snow Tires Best For You?

Chicago receives on average, 38 inches of snow fall each winter; that’s over three feet of snow!  If you take enough time, money, and care to pick out the perfect vehicle for yourself or maybe your child, you should also put the same amount of energy into making sure nothing happens to it during the winter.
The best way to do that is to purchase a set of new snow tires.  They are made completely different and with different rubber for the specific purpose of safe driving on snow and ice.  The rubber they are made from ensures flexibility even below 32 degrees.  Regular tires become hard and rigid when it’s cold, reducing traction grip.

Snow tires are also made with cleats or studs that maximize traction on icy roads.  The special design on the tread helps to effectively clear snow, ice, water and slush out from under the tire while moving.

A few tips for taking care of your snow tires are to make sure you buy a full set of four.  Only having two on the front or back will actually increase the possibility of sliding or spinning out on ice.  Also, make sure when winter is over you change the tires back out because it will wear out the winter tires faster, causing you to have to purchase an entirely new set next year.  Otherwise, you can store them away to use again the following year.

America Will See BMW X1 This Fall

BMW’s X1, which has proved to be a successful vehicle in Europe, will now be coming to America. Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this week was the American version of the BMW X1.

The BMW X1 is a smaller crossover Sport Activity Vehicle that has been selling at a great pace in European markets where gas is expensive and where most vehicles on the road are smaller compact cars.  The X1 has earned a reputation of being a fuel efficient and light crossover vehicle.

There is a lot of potential with the American version of the X1. It will be one of the smallest vehicles in its class, even smaller than its sibling, the BMW X3. BMW believes that American consumers will be more willing to downsize their vehicles with the high price of gas, and the BMW X1 is the perfect combination of size, efficiency, and performance.

BMW 5 Series Hybrid will Debut in Tokyo

BMW will debut a 5-series hybrid at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show later this month. The new ActiveHybrid 5 will help BMW’s new strategy to improve fuel economy without compromising driving experience.

It will be powered by an electric motor that will run off a lithium battery and a twin-turbo six-cylinder in-line engine. Equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the car can achieve a combined 340 horsepower.

The hybrid 5-series will offer drivers with a boost function to provide more dynamic acceleration and enable the car to coast with the combustion engine switched off. It will also come equipped with a smart energy management system that works with the navigation system to prepare the car for upcoming road conditions.

With the ActiveHybrid 5 becoming available in the US next spring, BMW will now offer three gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. A hybrid version of the 7-series and X6 are currently available, and BMW also plans on offering a hybrid 3-series model late next year.

BMW is Bringing the 4-Cylinder Engine Back

With demand for higher fuel efficiency from both customers and the government, BMW has decided to bring back its 4-cylinder engines to the U.S. after to quit offering them 12 years ago.

BMW 4-cylinder Engine BMW will offer a 4-cylinder engine in both the BMW Z4 and 5 Series sedans when they begin arriving in dealerships this October. In the future, the German automaker plans to offer the TwinPower turbo 4-cylcinder on additional models as well.

Jim O’Donnell, head of BMW’s U.S. operations explained that the company originally nixed the smaller engine because it wasn’t in-line with the automakers image at the time and didn’t have the performance necessary for a BMW. “Now that the engines have developed so far, it’s not an issue at all,” commented O’Donnell.

Switching over to the smaller engines, BMW hopes to improve fuel efficiency by almost 20%. For example, the BMW Z4 powered by the TwinTurbo 4-cylinder engine expects to get better than 32 mpg highway.

Some are speculating that in the future, up to 40% of BMW’s U.S. sales may end up being 4-cylinder models.
